Do You Have the Gift?
Of dreaming that is. Can dreaming at night be a gift from the Holy Spirit?
Welcome to The Dreamer and all things dreaming! I am so excited to share and explore this topic based on my own experience and study. My hope is that you’ll have fun with this and that it might very well help you open up to the possibility of dreaming, remembering and recalling them and, ultimately, figuring out what your dreams mean to you and for you! (That’s one of my favorite parts of this.)
Can Dreaming Be a Gift?
You might think that the gift of dreaming is an odd statement. Isn’t dreaming a random thing that happens at night based on what you ate for dinner? I believe dreaming is a gift - as in a present. But also a personal gifting, as in an other worldly talent, from the Holy Spirit. Not a random nightly occurrence given to the one who indulged in a peculiar combination of foods the evening before. But dreaming, like other known gifts from the Holy Spirit such as faith, teaching, speaking, and leadership, to name only a few, is given to us for a purpose and by design. The gift of dreaming is personal and is something to be nurtured and used like all other gifts of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God.
But I never really thought of dreaming as a gift until the past few years. For me, not just merely that I dream and tell stories, but that dreaming so enriches my communication with God; receiving impressions on levels that I could never achieve on my own in realms that I could only enter upon invitation.
Some randomly dream here and there, sometimes remembering, sometimes not. And some, like myself, started dreaming and remembering along with learning to talk. That’s the clue into the “gift” part.
Dreaming, Recall, and Interpretation Can be Developed
Dreaming, recall and interpretation can be developed over time. I know this from experience and from helping others learn to do this as well. It takes time and patience but if you are willing to go on a ride into the dreamscape, there are super easy things you can do to start the process.
Mental and Emotional Well-Being
People who have the ability or desire to “self-reflect” tend to be on the road to increasing their emotional and spiritual maturity and intelligence. When you muse, contemplate, and think about why you behave a particular way, then you are more likely to make more positive changes in your life. Well, your dreamworld has a flood of messages for you. And the great thing about it is that because it is unique and personal in nature (yes, archetypal symbols count, too), the more you delve the more you begin to understand your own “dream language”.
And I’m going to help with that.
One Simple Thing You Can Do Now
Something you can to now to encourage dreaming is to get a journal and pen and put it on your night stand solely designated for recording your dreams.
I can hear some of you now, “I don’t dream, it never happens!”
I knew someone who did this and complained for months (yes, months!) that it “wasn’t working” and that she “never” dreams. Then around the third month she returned to me with exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment. “I dreamed!! I remembered the dream!!”
First we have to tell The Dreamer (that’s you) to dream. Dreaming is told in symbols and stories. So we talk to The Dreamer in language understandable: Symbols. A Notebook. A Pen…where you will write the story. And if the notebook and pen has to sit there for a while, so be it.
Dreamer, Awake!
What is your experience with dreaming? Let me know.
I have had a most rare vision. I had a dream, past the wit of man to say what dream it was… The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, man's hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, nor his heart to report, what my dream was.
(Bottom, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespear)
Very good read. Always ask the interpretation from the Holy Spirit. Lots of gurus out there putting out weird stuff. Good write.
